Where Do You Start – Overview

Start Button for building a website
It’s time to start developing that website you need…

I have had people on several occasions ask where they should start when deciding to establish an Internet presence either for themselves or  for their business. This will be the first in a series of articles about the process of getting a website, any website, up and running.

We’ll talk about website (domain) names, what to use, how to find out if your chosen domain name is already being used and how to reserve or register a domain name for your use. Then we’ll talk about what a website is, where it is and how you display it on your computer. Since you will need somewhere to store your website we’ll discuss website hosting options and look at some of the hosting solutions available at reasonable cost. There are different types of website design methods available so we’ll look at static HTML sites and CMS-based websites such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla.

Once we get that far we’ll talk about who is going to do all the work to get your site up and running. Yes, I provide website design/development services, however, this section will not be an advertisement for my services. It will be a discussion of the things that you need to look for and ask about if you are going to hire someone to set up you site or what you will need to know if you decide to do the work yourself.

If you have any questions or comments please leave them at the bottom of the articles.
